Fishing Brook Fishways

In Old Saybrook’s Oyster River, Alewife and Blueback herring, collectively known as river herring, return from the ocean each spring to spawn. Until recently, migrating fish could not access the rich inland waters of Old Saybrook because of dams. Our Historic Fishway Restoration Project once again shows what groups can do when they work together. Funding for the project was secured by the DEP, Save the Sound, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Fish America Foundation, Long Island Sound License Plate Fund, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Long Island Futures Fund and Restore America's Estuaries.
